| Would love feedback on what helped your child prepare for testing for applying to 6 grade for private schools. We are looking at russian math (virtual) mathnasium and private tutors. For a private tutor not sure how to find someone who can prepare my son for testing? Thanks for any advice. |

Are you trying to improve a standardized test score (SSAT, ISEE, etc) or improve their results for a placement test?
For standardized testing, it’s better to focus on taking practice tests, using test-specific review books or online platforms like Test Innovators, or getting a tutor that specializes in prep for that specific test. If you are trying to increase your child’s math knowledge for a placement test to get them into a more advanced math class, that’s a different thing. |
No just looking to firm up their math skills so they do well on the testing required to apply to 6th at DC private schools... |
| Test prep is the way to go. The math isn’t that hard on the tests. It’s a matter of understanding what is being asked. Get some review books and have your kid take a couple of practice tests. Depending on the scores, get a private tutor or go to a test prep center and have them show him how to do the type of question that he is getting wrong. But, research first. In DC, most of the private schools don’t require tests at middle school even if they do for 4th and High School. And, many change their policy every year. My son applied last year and never had to take a test. The year before, one or two schools did require the test. You need to find out about this year from the schools. |
