My husband needs a hobby - ideas?

My husband isn't your typical guy - he doesn't play golf, he doesn't meet friends for drinks after work, etc - he's more introverted and prefers being at home with me & the kids (which I love!!!) But he's getting restless on the weekends and wants to start developing a hobby. What are other men doing out there? What exactly goes on in the garage with a workbench - what are people building/fixing/etc? And are there casual sports teams in DC, like softball or basketball? We're in our early 30s and my dh is just beginning to allow himself some extra time for fun outside of working/traveling and being with our family and friends. Thanks for your suggestions!

My husband enjoys biking and reading. That might be an option if your H is more introverted. My DH tried out playing on a softball team, and it just didn't really seem to work for him.

So, he used to bike a decent amount in college, and has gotten back into it recently. There are TONS of awesome bike trails in this area, and it gives him a chance to be out in "nature" and by himself for a little, plus he gets some exercise.

He also figures that when the kids get older, it's something he could do with them.

As an aside, definitely count yourself lucky that he prefers being at home with the kids! Sounds like a good guy.

My DH recently started Aikido (martial arts). He too is pretty introverted.

There are many sports league playing in DC and around. Flag Football, Softball, Frizbee and Kickball. Either leagues or in pickup game style

Have him join meetup.com and he can find a meetup groups that fits his interest and that meets every week/months or so.
Its a great way to meet people with the same interest and there are meetups for everything, sport, pets, lanuages and everything else you can think of.

My husband is more the artistic type. He's into photography, and we like to take day trips to unique places in the area and take pics. Now that we have a baby, ds is often the subject. We used to have a darkroom, but now he does all digital. He also likes to run. And, he likes to use his power tools when he gets a chance. For example, he built me an outdoor planter so I could start a small vegetable garden. He also likes to build lamps.

Just don't let him buy an old vehicle to fix up. Trust me, they're money pits.

What activities did he enjoy in high school or college? Or did he hope to do some day?

I second meetup.com - it is a great resource

Join a book club at the local library or bookstore.
Your DH likes to tinker and fix things - habitat for humanity

My husband likes to build things ... he's on his second set of built-in bookcases and I'm trying to get him to build a potting bench. The kids like to help him which is also a bonus...

My husband loves photography and has gotten very good at it over the years, especially portraits, luckily for our family!

Mine seems to enjoy spending long periods of time in the bathroom -- masturbating, reading...who knows. Maybe I should suggest golf or something.

Yeah, that was my big laugh of the day, too. Thanks, 15:18!

OP again - thanks everyone! Great suggestions and I really appreciate getting a sense of what other guys are doing out there. I'm going to plan for a "garage makeover" and install a workbench for him, so we'll see what happens. Will be good for our ds as well, as he gets older and wants to spend more time with his dad.
