Multivariable prerequisite for college Statistics?

Based on discussions here, I suggested DC just take AP Stats and not stress about Calc AB/BC. But DC, looking to pursue a tech/engineering major, says they’re planning to take not only Calc AB/BC, but also multivariable alongside AP Stats. Apparently, their math teacher mentioned that multivariable is a prerequisite for engineering-level Statistics in colleges. Any thoughts on this?

If your kid wants to apply to a tech/eng major, they need to take calc. And if they want a highly ranked school, they need to try to take the most rigorous path.

Stats (as you've noted) while super useful, is known to be the easier path, and having it in place of calc is not going to cut it.

AP Stats is an easy intro course and a great number of Calc BC students enroll in it.

Why would you not take multivar if planning on pursuing engineering? You need linear algebra for a lot of things also, and the 2 go together in FCPS.

I never heard of Multi Var to be a Pre Req to Stat - only Calc II.

Not 100% false. There are mathematical statistics courses which require multi. Joint, marginal, and conditional probability density functions require multiple integration. Change of variables requires Jacobians.

Any statistics course beyond the most basic freshman stats class requires linear algebra.

Beyond that, a kid aiming at an engineering major needs to take Calc BC in high school if their school offers it. Without that, the counselor won't be able to indicate that the student is pursuing the most rigorous curriculum, and without that, it will be hard to get into an engineering program.

UW-Madison's MATH 234 is a multivariable calculus course, officially titled "Calculus--Functions of Several Variables", required for all engineering majors. Calculus based Statistics is also required for engineering students.

Some of you really get off on the "most rigorous curriculum" thing, and act as if high school counselors are trigger happy to check something lower, which isn't true. If a student takes 10 APs or something, and one of them isn't Calc BC, you're still going to get the check.

QR is usually a set of courses or placement exam. It varies based on schools. Columbia U. offers a placement exam to get out of the QR requirement (or at least it did when I went to college there several decades ago).
