Our ped recently suggested putting our kid on a high calorie diet for the next few months. But it has to be dairy free and most of the suggestions online lean heavily on cheese and whole milk.
Any suggestions? We want more variety to offer than PB&J, tuna salad, and hard boiled eggs. Occasionally we can get a few bites of chicken in there too. |
| Hummus and tahini, sunbutter, avocados, granola, protein waffles and pancakes. |
| When my underweight kids needed higher calories, I breaded and fried as many things as possible. Chicken, pork chops, fish, zucchini, mushrooms, eggplant. I also drizzled roasted vegetables and pasta with olive oil. We were peanut free and don’t love cheese (weird, I know) so I leaned on olive oil. |
| Avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, coconut milk. Meatballs? |

French fries
If you aren’t making them from scratch, you may need to check ingredients, because like many processed foods the additives may include dairy derivatives. |
| Smoothies. Use alternative milk for the liquid. Add calories with banana, avocado, flax oil. |
Add a scoop of Orgain Simple protein powder. It’s vegan and doesn’t have a ton of crap in it. My kids always enjoy their “chocolate milkshakes”. |

Cooking for Isaiah is a great cookbook with dairy-free recipes that are great for kids. While the recipes are also gluten-free, you could swap some things if that isn't an issue.

| Black beans and rice is a favorite in my house especially with guacamole |
| Pasta and meatballs (use whatever ground meat your kid eats for the meatballs). |
| Fry bacon, then keep the grease for cooking. |

I had an egg and dairy free toddler (now eats both). I used a lot of coconut milk. Coconut rice is an easy starting point - one serving can have as much as 500 calories. You can add it to smoothies, puddings, oatmeal, pancakes, quick breads, etc. I made a lot of very mild coconut curry chicken and salmon dishes.
I also made pumpkin pie, lasagne, and stuffed shells using cashews soaked overnight as a sub for pumpkin pie base and ricotta. Using cashews is a high calorie and protein and fat rich substitute. |
| Mashed potatoes made with olive oil |
| Smoothie with soy milk, raw cashews, frozen berries, a splash of oj, and half an avocado |
