| By what date should high school teachers have grades in the grade book? Two AP teachers have not entered grades - is it appropriate for a parent to follow up at this point? |
| That’s what interims are for. Teachers catch up on grading then. |
If the student knows that work has been turned in weeks ago and not been graded, then the student should follow up. |
|
Need a little more context here. How many assignments have been issued? When were the due dates?
As teachers we are now required to have roughly one graded assignment per week and we are supposed to have graded work returned like 5-10 days after its collected. So without the added context I don’t know if the teacher is wrong for not issuing graded assignments or for not grading the assignments. Either way its pretty unacceptable to have students completely in the dark on their progress 4-5 weeks into the quarter. |
| Are there grades in canvas and just not synced to studentvue, or not entered at all? If there are grades in canvas I wouldn't worry, but if there are no grades anywhere, then it might be time for your kid to check in with the teacher |
The new grading policy that Taylor passed says teachers have 10 days to grade things and provide feedback. So I would say it is in fact appropriate to follow up. |
Not necessarily. My kid’s AP Gov teacher sent an email to parents today basically deflecting possible low grades on interims because they just reflect what she’s graded “so far” even if the deadline for the assignment is before interims are due. Seems to be not how MCPS communicates their grading policy. Not sure why it takes her so long to grade. A weekly quiz on a scantron is all that’s been completed so far. Everything else is due in October the day of the unit 1 test. |
| Normal, I would. Teachers make all kind of excuses but it’s absurd. |
He can say anything but there is zero accountability. |
| We should go back to the days where no one saw grades until report cards and if parents wanted to know they asked to see their kids work. |
150 essays at 15 minutes each takes 37.5 sustained hours of grading. That’s 37.5 extra hours of unpaid work to get done in 10 days. I don’t call that an excuse. I call it an explanation. And I agree it is absurd. It’s absurd that we consider that workload acceptable. |
Interims are on Friday. 40% of the assignments for the quarter should be in the grade book by then. |
Well said. |
| By HS I never followed up with teachers. That was my kids’ job and they usually seemed to know how they were doing in classes. If they didn’t and I thought it was important, I had them follow up with their teacher. It seems extreme for a parent to be contacting the teacher absent special needs. |
| If teachers are expected to work 2 full time jobs for the price of one or risk getting fired, then we should start a class action to demand our rights and contracts to be held up. |
