ECNL moving to school year not calendar

They are just delaying the official SY announcemnt so that everyone starts at the same time and we dont have clubs in overlaping MLSN and ECNL markets jumping the gun.

Recruitment Manager of a local P2P MLSN1 club just told me:

- MLSN2 will be BY 25/26 and will switch to SY 26/27.

- MLSN1 will be BY 25/26 and undecided yet for 26/27 (Academies have strong opposition to switch SY, however P2P clubs push for the switch, otherwise they cannot organize themselves)

This seems like most logical take right now. For the large P2P MLSN clubs, staying BY for just MLSN1 will be a major PITA. Most of them can barely keep it together without this extra headache of trying to manage two different systems.

They announced mls next is staying by

This is BS. They are different orgs. CalSouth is not stupid to make this PR blunder.

I was on the zoom meeting. I was surprised when they announced that MLSN was staying BY. It was literally the only real news that came out of the meeting. FWIW, I am a SY advocate.

"Staying BY" (for now) because the change to SY hasn't happened yet is entirely different than "staying BY" after the upcoming change to SY. No chance they were referring to the latter. That's not how big announcements get made.

You’re an idiot.

“Nothing is changing” is not a big announcement.

Why does it matter if MLSN stays BY? Who cares?

It makes 0 sense to sit quietly like this unless they are planning some sort of change. Maybe they don't go full SY but surely something is up.

Orrrr…occams razor and all…there is not change and thus nothing to announce?

🤣

It does not make any business sense to stay in BY for p2p MLSN clubs, but BY crowds want MLSN to stay in BY at all costs, so they are relieved.

They are not staying BY or they would have already said so themselves...

Since when this industry ever done anything logical?
MLSN was the reason why US Soccer didn't mandate it. Now we will all have to endure two separate pyramids.

Once college sports are killed off for all the non P4 schools, these clubs and leagues are screwed. They know it and want their money while they can still get it.

5 years.

ECNL will have to pivot to a non college pathway after that. As a SY supporter, but clear eyed about the collegiate landscape, this whole endeavor was dumb with a capital D

Started with SY rumors ECNL was changing the age groups to 8/1. BY people saying that’s stupid they can’t do it without US soccer. To US soccer allowing leagues to choose and they’ve chosen 9/1.
To now BY people saying rumor is MLSN/GA staying BY and SY people saying you’re stupid they wouldn’t do that.

How the turn tables have turned

I do think it'll be interesting! MLS/GA clubs all play USYS with their littles. They could of course stay with birth year teams and play USYS anyway, nothing stopping them from doing they don't they will have a very weird problem at the U13 transition year.

And now you add in all the new MLSN2 clubs (where MLSN2 is their top level) who will have 90% of their teams in SY, who will have their 2nd teams in SY, and who will want to have their top teams compete in college showcases and tournaments (which will all be SY) and claim they will be BY? It is insane and not going to happen. At a minimum, MLSN2 will be SY. There is not a chance it goes BY.

MLSN2 will be BY. There is an article out there that said that, and that one of the primary reasons for MLS to do N2 was so that their feeder leagues WOULD be BY.

The made up club in PPs head, where PP keeps posting the same junk, and is now telling stories because they’ve run out of their “acadmies vs p2p” arguments.

Not. BY parent and not a Q1/2 parent.

Genuinely curious about why so many people are demanding that MLSN switch to SY despite the evidence that MLSN doesn’t intend to change.

What is the reason why you want it to be SY?
