Why are we giving detention to kids in MS who shows up 1-2 minutes after the bell and not to those who have behavior problems and disruptive to the class? Maybe we should also give detention to those that don’t do homework because they are disrupted also, not learning the material, using up more resources and holding back the class? Not talking about students with learning disabilities or special needs kids, this is about the general population with issues. |
Because it’s disruptive. Maybe your kid should work harder to get to class on time. |
How do you know they aren’t doing both?
If I submit a behavior referral, the kid gets a detention. If a kid amasses 10+ tardies, they get a detention. |
Detentions are assigned to those who misbehave and cause disruptions.
How many times was the student tardy? Were they caught in a tardy sweep? |
10 is a lot. We turn tardies in for a detention at 4. |
Being tardy is extremely disruptive, that’s true at all grade levels. |
Where was your kid for that 1-2 minutes? That's actually quite late in a middle school. If your kid was late because of a bathroom emergency or for another good reason, have the kid tell the teacher. I've never met a MS teacher who wouldn't mark that as an excused tardy, which wouldn't earn a detention. |
Ours is 10 across all 8 classes. Admin runs a weekly report, anyone with 10+ cumulative for the quarter sits in detention at lunch. |
You don't think a kid yelling in class and knocking metal water bottles over on purpose is disruptive? |
I am fine with detention because it’s important to be on time and you will be fired from a job if you’re always late. Agreed, tardies are disruptive and easier to catch because they walk in late and need a pass. Classroom behavior is a hit or miss depending on the teacher and who the kid is and it’s definitely not happening in many FCPS schools. Is there detention for not doing homework? Would love that too. |
teach your kid to get to class ontime |
They all get detention, back in the day I was given lunch detention for this, and nothing wrong with giving detention for this now days. He wlll be fine maybe he learn a lesson |
Both are disruptive. And both can result in detention. |
A lot has changed from back in the day. Apparently detention is not equitable so many schools don’t have it for classroom behaviors. |
