FSU is ranked #54 and out-of-state COA is $25k. UTK is ranked #109 and out-of-state COA is $33k.

Easy decision.

VT is ranked better than W&M. Would you choose VT?

The difference in ranking between VT and W&M is 3 spots, not 55 as between FSU and UTK. And there’s no cost difference between the former, whereas between the latter FSU costs a third less.

So your analogy is stupid.

There is a good bit of merit money automatically available at Tennessee if you qualify via gpa and sat scores. My dd's are not super stellar by DCUM standards and she is getting 8K a year.

A difference of less than 5 ranking spots doesn't really matter whereas a difference of more than 50 is meaningful factor to consider (but certainly not at all dispositive). That's just common sense, but you of course knew that. That being said, the cost of VT and W&M is not the same -- VT is thousands of dollars cheaper in-state so if a kid prefers a big school and VT has a good progam in their intended major, they should choose VT over W&M.

For some majors, absolutely.

Tennesseans are 4 times more likely to have parents who are cousins.

Now you want to arbitrarily decide what matters and what doesn’t matter when it comes to rankings. Just admit you were wrong to bring up rankings.
