Oven cleaning

Anonymous
I cleaned some spilled oil from the bottom of my oven. I got most of it but couldn't get some of the black charred thin drips. But when I turned the oven on for about 10 minutes, I saw an occasional light smoke stream coming from the back and it smells a little bit, but not like smoke. Is this normal or do I need to clean it more? I can't remember if that was how it was before.

There's probably just a little bit of residual oil (or cleaning fluid that you used to clean it) that is burning off. If the smoke isn't too bad, you can probably just leave it, and it will eventually stop. If there's a lot, it could make your food taste (and your house smell) burned, so you may want to clean it. If your oven is not "self cleaning," they make oven cleaners now that don't require heating, and really don't have the awful fumes of yesteryear. After years of having self cleaning ovens, I had to use one a while back and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the smelly mess I remember from my childhood.

The light smoke did stop and it looks ok now. Thanks!
