McGill and University of Toronto: if they were in the U.S., where would they rank?

Anonymous
DC is seriously considering colleges in Canada and the UK. We prefer if they are a bit closer and we have always loved Canada. Wondering what these two top Canadian colleges are comparable to among schools we know here. TIA

Top 20

Toronto - definitely a Top 20 - but it differs from many of those in the sense that it's not a small private school. More akin to a large state school in practice (a la UC's and Michigan).

Personally I would attend UNC or UM over Canadian schools. So they are on par with top publics in the US.

mcgill - William & Mary level.
UT - some mash up of U Wash, Cal, and Michigan.

not sure what those are ranked these days

U Toronto is very much a city school and it’s had very real housing issues for students.

I spoke at a conference in Toronto a year or two ago and the hotel was providing longterm housing for students. It was weird.

It’s not off too much. McGill probably more similar to BU, it doesn’t have stern. UofT engineering is top notch, but outside engineering UofT is not at Cornell level or even Cal level.

UofT: Georgia Tech
McGill: BU

Just look at the USNews global rankings and strip out any non US or non Canadian (or look at the other global rankings if you don’t like USNews).

Toronto would be 14 and McGill I think like 30.

Toronto is massive. Like 80,000 students.

Also, it’s common for a very high percentage of commuter students at Canadian schools.

GA Tech and BU are nowhere near the top 100 in global rankings. U of T is a well rounded school that GT is not. It has a renowned medical school (penicillin was invented there), business school and CAS. It’s top 10 globally for AI and quantum computing. GT is great but not the same caliber.

they are mediocre maybe mid-level state schools like Jmu or UMBC, they are very easy to get into and massive not that impressive outside of canada. UVA, UMD, and even Virginia Tech have lower acceptance rates.

80k spread across 3 campuses including part time and grad students. St George campus which is where you would want to go is half that. But yes it’s large.
