HW 9th grade

How much HW does your 9th grader have?

It’s picking up more (very little in the beginning). I would say roughly 2 hrs/night plus what he does in study hall which is not everyday due to block scheduling

Every night so far, but manageable. I heard it picks up near the end of the school year and remains elevated until graduation!

Others input? Math alone is a ton for our DC. 20-30 homework problems, plus studying for quizzes/tests. It’s a block schedule thankfully but DC doesn’t like math and it is a struggle

It makes sense that it takes your DC longer to complete math homework than many of her classmates because she doesn't like the discipline. I'm sure she excels in other classes at completes her homework more quickly.

When we were looking at schools for 9th and asked about HW expectations, one school (can’t remember which, maybe Flint Hill) said to expect 30 minutes per regular class, 45 minutes per honors class, and 60 minutes per AP. DC is now a junior and based on the last couple years (not at FH), I’d say each class exceeds that by 15-30 minutes, generally. Major assignments like a final paper or a huge test could be more.

So far it has been manageable. My 9th grader does some work during study hall and after school before coming home. But I think it will ramp up and I’m a little worried about that…

Me again - I should have added that DC’s current school has a block schedule, so there are always at least two nights between meetings of the same class. Plus DC makes excellent use of free periods and built-in work time at the end of almost every school day. So at-home time probably averages about 2.5 hours.

Very manageable so far but we are only 2 weeks in! Kid gets most of it done at school and seems to have around 30 mins left at home
