Hello All,
DD is in middle school, and as grades are starting to come in, the assessments for Unit 1 in most core subjects have been completed. I was wondering how the grades are actually calculated. She has received a couple of B+ and A- grades and is feeling a bit anxious. I want to help her understand, but I’m not entirely sure how the grading works. I understand that summative assessments carry more weight than formative assessments. Will these grades add up over the course of the quarter as more assessments are completed? Thank you for your guidance! |
They break out scores on schoology. Go into grade book, click on the class, and you will see a list of all grades. That list tells you the number of points and if it is formative or summative. You should be able to figure it out from there. |
Only if the teacher is using the schoology gradebook and putting all assignments electronic. SIS is the gradebook of record, you should look there for grades. |
FCPS has mandated a 70% summative assessment policy. The remaining 30% is formative, of which up to 10% is homework.
Check the syllabi you received at the beginning of the year for the breakdown. My school mandated 70/25/5 for summative, formative, hw. |
OP here I kinda understood that its going to be Summative +formative but my question here is currently since my kid is having grades in B's is it going to get changed as we progress through meaning is it cumulative or how does it get calculated at the end of the quarter ? |
The total grade adjusts as additional grades are entered. It is automatic. My kid had a few B's which dropped his grade in a class to an A-, we chatted with him, helped him understand how to correct the issues he was having, and his next bunch of grades were A's, his overall grade went back to an A. |
The gradebook might be quarterly (with a grade for each quarter, starting from scratch at the beginning of each new quarter, averaged together to determine final grade) or rolling (cumulative for the whole year, with quarterly grades provided for your information only). It varies from class to class, and should be specified in the syllabus. |
Why did you post this exact same question on bothmthe FCPS forum and the AAP forum? |
FYI - I didnt post it in FCPS forum . I posted ONLY here in AAP ,may be the admins moved it over there , I guess they might have thought this info has nothing related to AAP it may go to FCPS forum.I only realised now after you have commented( I searched in FCPS forum and was surprised to see my threasd posted ) . Also its good to get different perspectives.Feel free to pass this thread if you arent interested instead of posting a rude comment without knowing the background . |
Thank you for the response.I kind of getting it now . My kid said even if she missed 2/3 questions she is seeing B+ or A-.In this case how do we get a perfect A ? . Also if we get A- we arent allow to take retest . Any tips that you followed to increase the grades that you dont mind sharing ? |
Yes, I reported you because it's true. This is an FCPS issue, not an AAP specific one. Stop being a snob. |
Oh my. Your DD is in AAP but she can’t weight and average grades? |
