Ideas to apply for a "good" fcps student

Anonymous
My DD was basically told to apply to UVA and be done with things. I just don't think the school would be a great experience for her. We are a black family and I went there and it was a struggle. And I was a TJ kid!

Anyway, we are trying to come up with ideas for her to expand her list. She's starting the year with a cumulative 4.3ish and 34 ACT.

Any ideas are welcome!

OP, people are likely to be most helpful with this question if you can add some more details such as:
- urban vs. rural/suburban
- large vs. small vs. medium size school
- LACs of interest at all?
- regional needs/preferences (as in, want to stay in the Mid-Atlantic vs open to going anywhere)
- intended major (since some schools are better than others for various majors)

And your budget and whether you will get need-based aid.

What is she interested in?

Seems like she has a lot of options with those starting stats. Is she a senior?
Large? Small? LAC?
Pitt for rolling?

I wonder if she would be able to talk with current UVA students through their multicultural center. Not that she needs to apply or go there but to get a sense of things now at a state school. Same for other state schools.

C’mon OP. You know this is the wrong forum for finding a college for your kid if you and she truly are who you say you are. You’re smarter than that and so is she.

She's pretty quirky. I would say urban campuses are too much for her because she's easily overwhelmed (hated NYC). She's lived here her whole life and is somewhat sheltered. Her friends are artsy but really just typical nerdy kids. Everyone at some point was convinced they were on the spectrum in the friend group. None of them were ever diagnosed (we even had our kid tested and she isn't). So, quirky.

Not a huge STEM kid. Can do well in math and science classes but just likes to learn.

OP here. We are looking at zero aid. We make too much, I'm sure (living here is expensive!).

Sounds like William & Mary to me.

For LACs, I think she'd love them. She's afraid of it feeling small (she goes to one of those mega FCPS schools). Weirdly, I feel like the single sex schools might be interesting?

Wellesley would be a good fit academically, but is she against the idea of going to a women's college. Like many NE schools, it's a very diverse school.

What are ECs? I mean, she'd probably get in easily with top stats and a bit of an undersubscribed major to Dartmouth, Amherst, etc. Is that too rural?

Just stop. Yes based on the stats she has as good a chance as anyone but to say she’d “probably get in easily” to Dartmouth or Amherst is ridiculous. Nobody gets into either easily, at least not coming out of FCPS.

I'm not Black but my quirky kid really wanted a place that valued diversity. We looked at:

LACs: Amherst (Williams too but only if she can handle really remote), Haverford, W&M.

Mid-sized: Brown, Rice, Wash U
