I have a four-year old cavachon that likes to suck his penis. We’ve had him checked by a vet, and he’s clinically fine. I’m sure he’s not the only male dog that does this, but I can’t stand it.
I’ve tried to redirect him, but he just goes back to doing his thing. I’d like to not walk him every time this happens. What have you done that works? |
| Is he fixed? |
Dogs, like toddlers, can't learn from delayed consequences. Refusing to walk him because some time earlier he was acting like a dog, is really dumb. |
Op. Yes. |
| What kind of dog would have this kind of flexibility??? |
I didn’t mean that he makes me mad, so I won’t walk him. That would be mean. Instead, I meant that I would prefer not to walk him (as a distraction) each time he sucks. |
My cavachon! |

Shock collar, low setting. Sharp verbal reprimand + negative stimulus. Some collars have a vibrate function that might be enough to get his attention.
You could also try a spray bottle, or throwing a can full of pennies or other loud noisemaker, but I've found a shock collar is effective and requires little time before simply using the verbal command is sufficient. I'm sure I'll get flamed for not gently asking him nicely to please stop, but that's gross and I would also want a quick stop to it. |
How do you think animals groom themselves? |
Any, I think I have 3 right now and all of them can do it, from 65 lb adult golden retriever to 15 lb 4 mo mutt pup |
Licking, yes. Sucking? TF? |
| He is CLEANING himself. Get over yourself. |

| Train him not to do this. Any time my dogs do something I dislike, I reprimand them and then make them do something less fun for a few minutes. I agree that is gross and I would not tolerate it without comment. It’s so easy to train dogs to do what you like because they want to please you. Take advantage of it! If he was a cat, he’d do it to spite you. |
| Why are you watching your dog do this? It’s a dog thing and he’s probably cleaning himself. |
