when your car is in the repair shop

When your car needs to be in the shop for a few days and you have children and jobs to juggle would you instinctively get a rental car or would you try to wing it with dropping spouses off early at work and being hyper aware of time/schedules (for example: sometimes you work late but you would have to go home during these few days.

Strictly a cost/ benefit analysis. For me, I would get a rental car. For some people that’s not worth the cost for just a few days.

We coordinate our schedules.

We only have one vehicle and we just cope without it when it's in the shop, but my job and the kids' school are walking distance and DH can get to work on public transportation so it's easier for us than for many families.

Our lives don’t depend on our cars.

My dealership always gives me a rental car.

This sounds like you're having an argument with your spouse about the topic. Get the rental car, it alleviates the mental load of working around it.

If the dealer/shop doesn’t give a free loaner, we juggle schedules or work from home. No way am I paying for a rental while a car is in the shop.

Rental, covered by insurance

Uber?

Got the rental car and then the repairs took longer than expected, thus making the rental more expensive than expected.

If the rental is not covered by insurance, and I had to do it over again, I would juggle.

Whatever makes the most sense at that moment.

Juggle, but it would be pretty rare that it's in the shop longer than 2 days without insurance being involved so maybe then I would rent

DH and I both commute 30+ minutes to work, but in nearly opposite directions from our house, so sharing a car doesn't work. We get a rental unless it's a rare occasion that one of us can work from home for a day. Oh, one other time - DH was traveling while my car was in the shop, so he took an Uber to the airport and left his car for me.
