Gov. Moore : schools can implement COVID requirements

Anonymous
I had to do a double check and I’m posting here to check myself on this. I just read Governor Moore press release about vaccines. I’m pro vaccines and believe kids should be vaccinated to go to school. However, there’s an interesting sentence at the end of his release, saying that schools may implement their own Covid requirements. Is this opening the door for different counties to implement their own requirements? Could he just be talking about private schools?

IMO, just like the flu shot is not a requirement I don’t think the COVID shot should be either. Those are up to each family.

“ For children, school immunization requirements have not changed. COVID-19 vaccines are not currently required for students under this schedule, but schools may implement their own recommendations and requirements for attendance. Families should talk to their pediatrician about ensuring their children are up to date on all vaccines recommended for their child.”

They must not have run that language past lawyers. A school can recommend whatever they want, but refusing to serve students that meet the requirements in statute and COMAR isn't going to go well for them in court.

To be clear, no public school in Maryland is going to mandate the covid vaccine. That would clearly violate state law. District lawyers would explain to school boards and administrators that any attempt to do so would be immediately struck down by a court. The only question would be how much the district would have to pay in plaintiff legal fees.

I think private schools should be allowed to require it if they want. Public schools should not require this vaccine though.

That may have been the basis for someone arguing that part of the press release wasn't technically a lie.

I agree that the language is unclear. I love Moore but they need to send a clear message so that everyone understands what is epected.

Unclear?

You mean, specifically intended to be misinterpreted?
