WWYD in terms of retirement notice?

Late 60's at a senior, not C level. Have never made as much money as I do now. Wanted to work another year and retire around Dec 2026. Have decided to move that up and retire, aka give my two weeks mid Oct or next month. Reason is an unbearable commute along with a new boss who leaves something to be desired. Took the job hybrid (on my offer letter) and now 4 days in. Asked the new boss about keeping a hybrid arrangement, said he would think about it and get back to me, and never did.

Now, I know I am going to get the "I drove 100 miles/day or 3 hours for 10 years" stories but the ride is fighting traffic for either 80 miles or 84 miles round trip depending on which location I go to. Or just over two hours or at least 2 1/2 hours every day of a time suck. I do not want to do it when daylight savings time ends as it will be pure hell.

The entire situation is getting on my nerves and I dread commuting in. Should I just quit now, wait until October, or just say F it, come in three days a week and see what they do? Ever since I started this drive more days a week, gained 10 pounds and my blood pressure went up.

At late 60s, I think you have done your part. If you have saved enough, I’d punch out. Life will get shorter real fast.

What is your question, really? If you can retire, then retire. You need to give notice, two weeks at a minimum, more if you desire.

Are you ready to retire financially? Do you have something to retire to?

OP: I'm one of these people who will never feel like they saved enough. But I made sure to cut out debt I had. Your last sentence is a concern I've had. Have seen a lot of people I went to school with or worked for die in the last few years.

OP: I'm looking to do what I do now, but on an interim or part time basis. It can then be my vacation or fix the house money.

Part time professional jobs are few and far between. Maybe ask you boss if you can work part time due to commute (but many of us have bad commutes and learn to deal with it).

I lost my job but ended up taking a new job with worse commute after giving up trying to work part time. Like you, I’m almost ready to retire but want to save more for kid college fund. And I was bored when not working and didn’t want to start a low pay job or volunteer.

If you are in 60s, you probably have about 10-15 good years left unless you parents lived to 100. The second half of 10-15 remaining years will be no fun (mid 70s and on). So, your time is, indeed, limited. Make those years about you. Good luck.

Do you have Medicare A and B?
You need them as soon as you retire. Allow time to get that.
Most employee retiree health coverage if your employer offers that is secondary to Medicare. Medicare must pay first.
If you have health coverage now via a working spouse how long will they keep working? They will have same issue.
I do not think October is enough time to get Medicare in place.

Give them two months’ notice and revert to your hybrid schedule whether they say it’s ok or not. What are they going to do, fire you?

We don't have any realistic picture of your financial health so it's hard to say.
In general, short life left or not, many people enjoy their last years with a purpose and Office mates. If you tried, you'd likely be able to get along with your new boss. Retirement is out to the pasture for most people and boredom quickly sets in and shortens the life span.

I've gotta do a little bragging. My wife drove 240 miles a day / 4 1/2 hrs a day for (11) years. Why you ask ? Mostly because she's the most dedicated loyal employee you'd ever meet, be damned how unloyal companies are. A move for us was not feasible. The pay was worth it.
