| I hate being asked that question. It makes me insecure about my music taste and haven’t figured out how to answer without sounding lame. What do you say? Do you start naming genres or specific artists? Or do you say “anything besides…” and then list the genres you don’t like? Or more characteristics of your music, such as chill, energetic, emotional? |
| None! Why do people need to have noise going on all the time? I crave silence. |
|
I say "It really depends on my mood and whether I want to change or enhance it, but right now I'm really into Nick Cave."
OP don't go so deep. I know Ivy grads who are Swifties and lobby security guards who love classical piano. It says nothing about you - it's just a question to find something to talk about. |
Music quiets the noise so I can think. |
| If someone judges you for your music taste, they’re the loser. I don’t listen to much music anymore but when I did and people asked me that question, I would just give a vague answer like, “I enjoy the hits from various genres. I rarely go deep into any discography”. |

Yo Yo Ma's Bach cello concertos
Fleetwood Mac Rolling Stones Algerian music Ali Farka Touré |
| I just flip the conversation around, tell them their choices are "over" and then I make fun of the IPAs they drink. |
|
I turn it into a conversation about my favorite non-commercial radio stations (and how sad it is that no one listens to the radio anymore).

It's a low I.Q. question to make small talk, so give an appropriate response such as "loud music" or "whatever doesn't have any C notes in it" if you want to confuse them. |
Same. My god the noise never stops. |

I mostly listen to classical music: medieval plainsong, some Baroque and Classical, but mostly Romantic period, and a little musical Impressionism.
But usually I stop at classical music, because most people, unless I'm with musician friends, don't want to hear more. |

I particularly like music when I drive.
I'll listen to just about everything, classical, opera, musicals, rock, pop, rap, oldies. I sang in choir in college and my favorite piece we performed was Mozart's Mass in C minor. I am mightily sick of "Golden" and "Your Idol" but I have a kid who's obsessed with KPop Demon Hunters right now and you let your kid have fun. |
