Just got an interview for a job I applied to in June…

I had written this one off as “ghosted” but lo and behold I got an email today (at 5pm on a Friday) inviting me to do a panel interview next week (I’m also surprised it’s jumping straight to panel and not a screener). Do you think someone backed out and they’re going back through it did they really take this long to go through resumes?

I’m excited either way (though I’m in process for another job that I’d prefer)…. But very surprised and confused!

Congratulations and good luck!

If it's a big company, they probably froze the position and just unfroze it.

Or, they hired and the person quit/did not pass the 5 month probation.

Sorry, I misread January.

For a 3 month delay beginning in June, I think overlapping summer vacations is the likely culprit.

For my current job I applied in January and got contacted in March. Started in May. It is a top employer and they can afford to wait, see all applicants and then choose the top finalists to interview. Actually their formal policy is they do not contact candidates prematurely.

Smaller/less known companies (as well as large ones with less centralized interview policy) will contact a qualified applicant asap, almost as soon as it comes in. Most of my other jobs I heard from very quickly.

I am a hiring manager for a large tech company, and I have literally had over 500 people apply to the same position over the last month. It's taking a long time to get through people. I am getting overwhelmed by H1B and other foreign-originating applicants, probably freaking out about getting deported, as they are working for unstable, smaller, or downsizing companies.

We are hiring for 2, 1 junior and 1 senior role. Too much energy was spent on getting the senior hire that we just remembered about the junior hire 😆

Was this a government job or private? I noticed government jobs can be very slow sometimes.

Either way, congrats and good luck!

I was called about a job in February. I didn’t get a first interview until May and then after 4 rounds of interviews, an offer in July.

OP here… private, nonprofit, senior level role. The email said that they got so many applicants it took them a while. But it still seems like a very very long time. And I’m shocked they’re going straight to an interview with staff and board. I’m in the process of other similar roles and go through at least 2 calls each with the recruiters before ever talking to the hiring manager…

I don't think it's that long, actually.

To me, this part (bolded) says that someone they got pretty far with backed out. They are already working together as a group or committee to make the hire and know what they are looking for. You just might be in the right place at the right time! Good luck, OP.

Your job can be done more efficiently by AI. IMHO

Not a surprise. My H1B friends have been getting interviews 2-3 months after applying. Good news is that they are getting hired because of their solid tech skills at higher rates. Of course, it is costing them their place in the legal immigration line.

Doesnt matter what happened on their end. Maybe someone backed out, maybe they really did take this long, maybe they froze and unfroze the position, who knows and who cares? The point is that you have an interview.

June-September would be lightning quick for a government job. I interviewed in July for a government job I applied to in January.
