My son is going to have open-heart surgery and I wanted to donate blood for him but I was deferred for having lived in Europe and according to this, for the risk of Creutzfeld Jakob disease. Is it not possible in this country that a mother donates blood for his son? Does anyone have encountered this, is there a option that I still can donate for him?

| I did not know they had that restriction. But think about it this way: your intent on giving your own blood is to be sure that your child has the safest blood option. They are trying to do the same thing. And you would be unlikely to know that you had CJD at this point in your life. So at least they are trying to look out for your son. Perhaps there is another family member who could donate blood in order to address the concerns of both you and his doctors. |
| Oh dear, I'm sorry. Having spent 5 years in Europe (including the UK) I am not allowed to donate blood for this reason, but it must be very frustrating when it is for your own child. |
| I'm so sorry to hear this. However, there is no way you can donate for him. This is true of all American blood banks. Would you really want to risk exposing him, no matter how small the risk is? Believe me, the decisions to limit donors like this was not an easy one for the blood banks. It severely limits many blood donors out there, including many who had donated for years and years. |
| It's probably too late for you at this point, but I just wouldn't answer the form honestly (if you believe your risk is low). |
Yes, lie on the form so that you could give your son a potentially life threating illness when he's having open heart surgery. You must be the most idiotic person I've ever met. you realize that her doctors are doing this to PROTECT her child from DEATH. That when you have open heart surgery you are more at risk to illness? Are you a doctor? A researcher who are familiar with Europian illnesses? I worry for your children, I really really do. |

When my daughter was an infant she needed surgery and we were asked by the hospital if we wanted to donate some blood in case it was needed. Our surgeon adviced us against it because he said that the hospital would not take the time to do all the appropriate testing that the blood banks do routinely. He said they just did the very basic and based most data on information given by the parents through a questionnaire.
We went with blood bank blood even though we were perfectly healthy. |
What's more, any unused blood would probably be banked for someone else, and you would be taking a risk on their behalf as well. |
Yikes! Are people like you really out there? |
