Rolling gradebook?

Anonymous
Are they still using rolling gradebooks in high school? We had back to school night and I noticed a couple teachers say that each quarter was worth 25% or whatever plus x% for the midterm/final. That doesn’t sound like rolling gradebook to me. Is that still the plan for this school year?

Nevermind, found the answer. It’s required next year, but not this year. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary-school

But - I swear that it was required in all DD’s classes last year. I dislike rolling gradebook so I’ll take a year with at least some classes that don’t use it!

The final grade ends up being the same so it truly doesn’t matter.

NP. Psychology is important. The school year is more than just the last day of school; the grade is more than the Gina grade.

The importance of each grade decreases the more grades you add in a rolling gradebook. So the poor grade in quarter 1 doesn’t have as big as an impact. I like it.

That's actually not true. I have used both a traditional gradebook and rolling gradebook and they do not average out the same

How different were the averages then? Was it a significant difference?

The difference can be as much as a few points. The only way the averages would be the same is if each quarter has the same number of assignments and points, which rarely happens. From what I have seen, the rolling gradebook usually has more of a positive impact than a traditional gradebook.

Agreed, the rolling gradebook generally comes out a couple points higher than the traditional gradebook.

So then why do people say they prefer a traditional gradebook? Also, another advantage of a rolling gradebook is grade replacement and making up tests are easier and there are no hard deadlines than if the gradebook closes for the quarter.

Probably because everyone on DCUM thinks change is bad….

Rolling grade books allow for grade improvement. All part of the “equity”movement.

Isn’t that good for everyone?

I did this past two summers,
only a few points. 95% of the gradea are the same.. 3% are + higher, 2% are - lower.

The best advantage of the rolling grade book is that you see the actual grade in real time. Exactly as it is in that particular moment. No guessing, just reality. I used it for three years and loved it.
