How do AI checkers work?

Anonymous
I know - i sound like a grandma.

I know kids are using ChatGPT to do everything now. I get that. And schools are checking or managing in different ones.

I have one question.

Kid wrote common app essay and wants to run it through ChatGPT (or similar) to see how it suggests cutting 50 words.

I worry putting original work into chat can cause it to be flagged. My kid insists that’s not how it works. It flags what Chat writes, not any ideas or cuts.

Does anyone actually know for sure?

Your kid is right.

But make sure you are only using the paid version of AI, and you turn off data sharing in your settings.

I would not do that. They should have writing skills adequate to cut 50 words or should not be attending college.

AI checkers are notoriously inaccurate. They do not run things through a database or anything like that. Plagiarism detectors are comparing to known passages/text. Since AI is "original" there isn't a way to do that.

However, once you put your data/content into an AI tool, it can now use that forever. I'd advise anyone to skip AI for simple editing.

Your kid also needs to cut their own 50 words themselves. It's not about whether AI can do it faster (or even do it better): it's about your kid learning strategies to critique their own writing and overcome their own blocks and blind spots. We don't give calculators to kids who don't know their math facts, and we shouldn't have students refining writing with AI before they actually know how to write at a functional, emerging-professional level and how to perceive and evaluate style and tone. And no, the vast majority of high-school graduates do not know how to do these things.

- Prof teaching freshman college writing (and no, my livelihood doesn't depend on them taking this course or on not using AI, so that's not my motivation)

Gpt 101: TURN OFF data sharing, any data input to ChatGpt is not public if you do that. and it will not turn your original work into flagged work.

This!

Everyone else here is a stay at home mom who has never worked or hasn’t worked in 10 years. The amount of bad information in this post is mind-boggling.

No wonder America is screwed.

There are AI tools out there that do this for you. Mind you they’re just wrappers, but looks like every senior is using it this year.

I can think of four or five well-known names that have been posted here in the past. Search AI.

The people saying not to use AI for editing or idea generation sounds like stay at home moms to me.

I made my kids do it themselves because they are capable of writing and editing their own work.

100%
It's shockingly ignorant. Its like saying don't use Google. Or a computer.
Don't use it to write. Sure. But, ideation? of course. Its how business in America runs today.

America is screwed because there are people who still prefer to do their own work rather than ask AI to do it for them?

AI is smarter than human intelligence. Don't be a grandma.
