Psychiatrist recommendation

Anonymous
Seeking recommendations for patient, kind psychiatrists good with teens who are willing to discuss the pros, cons and side effects of medication with a 16-year-old boy with mild to moderate inattentive ADHD who has not used medication prior and is willing to consider it, yet very concerned about side effects. Have been through a list of doctors in network for our insurance, United Healthcare and have found them impossible to reach - namely those through Georgetown U and Children’s Hospital or the recipient of multiple negative patient reviews so now looking out of network. Many thanks!

I have no recommendations for psychiatrists who take insurance. We loved Azin Bekhrad who is now at Hopkins (does virtual appointments) but she is OON. She is great with teens, very knowledgeable and appointments never feel rushed. However, it can take patience getting through to her for refills.

I feel like I’ve said this enough times on this forum that people are going to start thinking I work for the company but I promise I don’t!

Our pediatrician recommended we try talkiatry for our daughter’s med management. The pediatric psychiatrist we were connected with is excellent. She’s easy to get appointments with, takes insurance, very thoughtful in her approach and she spend our 30 minute visits talking to my kid like she is the most important and interesting person in the world. She will also go out of her way to communicate with the pharmacy to make sure everything is going smoothly.

I’m not sure I would use talkiatry if I needed really complex med management. I think for that you really need to see someone in person. But for somewhat less complex cases like yours, it might be worth trying.

We see a psychiatrist at Children’s at the Takoma Theater. Highly recommend.

Try calling there and asking about new patients etc. Might be easier to connect than the main hospital. I’ve never found the admin staff to be particularly helpful, but it is not reflective of the quality of the care there. The docs are top-notch!

We love Margery Johnson at Potomac Psychiatry. She's super rational and forms a great relationship with the kid.

Here is a list that’s been posted here several times. https://www.bethesdapediatrics.com/_files/ugd/c9a231_7ef518b8436743b68fe4d8918df83409.pdf

There may be long waits for intake appointments.
