When did FCPS start opening before labor day

Anonymous
I remember when I went tomorrow would've been the first day of school, when did they changed the start date? I have a 2nd grader and he always started before.

March 2019 with the repeal of Virginia’s Kings Dominion Law

Virginia switched about 4 years ago or so. Maryland switched to starting before labor day after Governor Hogan's term ended.

Hard to believe, but before covid, most local school districts in and around DC started after Labor Day.

It started in the fall of 2017.

This is correct. DCUM provides the receipts:

Wrong. They got a waiver prior to that.

Getting a waiver doesn’t make the fact incorrect.

I think only the western counties where snowfall was heavier got waivers. Certainly not FCPS, APS, etc, which started after Labor Day.

The trend across the country, except in some Northern and Western states, is to start a few weeks before Labor Day. Summer is becoming shorter but there are more breaks during the school year.

If they had more than x amount of weather cancelations, they were eligible to apply for the waiver. The conspiracy theory (whether right or not) was that we had all those "cold days" to allow us to get the waiver the following years.

You stated that the pre-Labor Day start began in 2019. That is an incorrect statement. It started in 2017 because they got a waiver from the “Kings Dominion law” to start before Labor Day.

September 6 was the start date in 2016.

We always vacationed the last week of summer and would get home on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. It was significantly cheaper and it was a fun way to end the summer. Anyways, our oldest came home for dinner last night and we were reminiscing about our summer vacations. He graduated from high school in 2018. He said the only year he started before Labor Day was his senior year - fall of 2017.

6 years ago. My child who is currently in 7th, started K after Labor Day, but started 1st before Labor Day.

It's terrible! If you have a kid in HS band or fall sports practice starts two weeks before schools open. That date is now on or around August 1st. Couple this date with the late June release and many high school students only have 6-7 weeks of summer. It's very hard to try to get an internship or job for that length of time.
