Why is 5'4 considered small for a woman online

Anonymous
Are woman's height being compared to male heights or extremely rare supermodels ?

If you look at statistical data the average height for a woman in the USA per the CDC is 5'3.5 . Also there is a theory online that white woman are huge , no the average white woman is only 1-2 inches than a Asian or Hispanic woman . The tallest country in the world dutch woman average 5'6-5'7 max not 5'9 lol .

I am a 5'4 woman and irl i dont feel small , when i wear 4-5 inch heels i am eye level with a lot of men . Most woman irl are 5'3 -5'5 not 5'6-5'8 lol this includes white woman as well .

I have a female cousins that are 4'11 and 5'0 now those woman are small not me .

5'5-5'8 is generally considered "Average"
so taller is tall and shorter is short. Sorry.

For a woman?! No. 5’8 is very very tall for a woman. Average for a man (or very close to it).

The average height for a woman in the U.S. is 5 feet 3.5 inches, or 63.5 inches. This figure is based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2015-2018 for women aged 20 and older. Average height can vary by race and ethnicity, with non-Hispanic Black women having a slightly higher average and Asian women having a lower average.

People are very stupid about height. I blame social media and this idea that all men “need” to be 6’0+, creating this idea that 6 feet tall is somehow normal and average, when really it is the 90th percentile of height for adult males. In other words, the vast majority of men are under 6’0. I assume some of the same stupidity is in play for women’s heights. Also, everyone lies about their height online etc so no one even knows what 5’4 looks like anymore. You are right that 5’4 is average for women, maybe even slightly above. I am 5’6 and feel pretty tall.

Is 5’4” really considered small online? Sure, female models are taller but it’s pretty universally accepted that models are especially tall.

Where are you seeing women that height beening referred to as small. I never had unless if reference to sports or modeling.

A lot of it depends on your peer group. Things like race, geography and socioeconomic factors all matter. The height bell curve is not evenly distributed across every place in the US. If you meet 3 random women from Minnesota and 3 from Miami, statistically the Minnesotans are likely to be taller. Add in the fact that models are tall and average people are not familiar with demographic data, you can see why people don’t know population-level facts.

I'm 5'9" and I'm not an extreme outlier in my workplace or social groups - lots of women are around my height, though rarely taller. My sister is an outlier at 5'11".

I don't know who is included in the CDC average but I wonder if it's skewed by an older population (prior generations not as tall + older individuals shrinking).

It wouldn't be a population average if you excluded groups.

This is a great example of how people just don’t understand statistics. Just because you seemingly have an extraordinarily tall immediate social group, doesn’t mean you aren’t an extreme outlier. You are extremely and unusually tall for a woman, at the 99th percentile. You are in fact the definition of an outlier.

Only a short person would think that 5'8 is very, very tall for a woman. 5'8 is rather short for a man.

I mean thanks for your opinions but you seem to not understand facts and statistics.

I'm 5'7" and was recently lined up in height order for a group photo at work. Out of ten women in my group, I am the tallest, with the shortest at around 5'2". I don't feel or consider myself tall, but the average woman is shorter than me by several inches.

Well, 5’8 is 95% for women so not sure what you would call it other than very tall? You don’t sound very smart.
