She had a great run, very happy for her.

For those who don't know, Townsend is a pro tennis player from the area (came up with Frances Tiafoe and his brother is actually on her coaching team, if that means anything to you) who just had a great run at the US Open against a bunch of higher ranked players. She also got called "uneducated" and "classless" by the WTA's resident clown Jelena Ostapenko after beating Penko fair and square. So people rallies around Taylor after that, rightly.

Taylor has had a ton of doubles success, and is still in the doubles tournament, but making the fourth round in singles at a slam was huge for her.

The McEnroe thing OP is referencing us that as a juniors player, Townsend was ordered to lose weight by the USTA, led by Patrick McEnroe, which is gross.

Patrick McEnroe didn’t order Taylor to lose weight.

Patrick McEnroe was head of USTA Player Development during our worst talent drought and refused to give Taylor Townsend a wildcard to compete in the US Open when she was the top-ranked junior player. He didn’t believe she was fit enough. This is not done but this entitled talentless fool who got several great jobs post a mediocre tennis career because of his brother punished her for not being a skinny white girl. She had no problems with her fitness she just wasn’t pleasing to his entitled spoiled white bro eyes.

I was a tennis fan while this was going on and was stunned by comments he would make during matches where he provided commentary. He and his brother would spend entire matches trashing Donald young for the chains he wore and for refusing to take a usta sanctioned move to Spain to be Nadal’s hitting partner which was a career limiting move. He also trashed Taylor’s body. It was disgraceful disgusting ignorant and beyond inappropriate.

Taylor, even back then, represented hope for a lot of people who didn’t really feel welcome in tennis. She meant a lot to me and I remember it being a time when racist statements were made all the time about the Williams sisters.

It was too much and no one ever did a thing.

Ps There are so many of us who never make it to a tournament who watch every match we can find online or on tv and live and die with every point you play. We’re always there cheering you on.

Not sure Ostapenko would really be aware of or understand race relations in the US or know that classless / less educated had anything to do with race. Just like likely Taylor probably couldn't speak to the nuances of language and class / race relations in Latvia or in Latvian. Saying someone is classless / uneducated could be a non race related insult in Latvia and more about classism than racism.

I agree, I don't think Ostapenko was being racist. Penko is also like this with EVERYONE.

The comments of other WTA tour players on the issue actually kind of show you that people think Penko is kind of dumb and emotionally immature, but not necessarily racist. People condemned her comments but even Osaka was like "if you aren't from the US you might not understand that that's pretty much the worst thing you can say about a black athlete in a white dominated sport." Sabalenka also had some comments that indicate Penko went after her in the player's area when Saba was actually trying to be kind to her, and was just like "I hope she figures her crap out and gets help."

Sometimes a person is simply too stupid to be racist.

I have watched so much tennis in the last two weeks and am late to the party on getting to know Taylor Townsend.

I’ve loved her tennis, her heart, and her real maturity.

The McEnroes are, in the words of at least one dedicated DCUM frequent poster, “insufferable.” I wish they’d both retire.

I can’t stand those men. They’re horrible commentators as well as people

Tennis has used new commentators recently I don’t know why they won’t fully switch to, the old folk of both genders are boring and out of step
