Hello - we have an anxious lab who is very territorial and will ‘air snap’ and bark at people who approach our house. If he’s in the car with me and someone approaches, he’ll growl and bark too. Need help - we have several kids so people are always coming and going from our house and it’s hard to always manage him too with all the visitors.
Would love to find a trainer in Potomac that goes to your home. Please let me know if you know of anyone good! Thank you! |

This list is a good starting point:
https://yourdogsfriend.org/we-recommend/positive-trainers/ Many do house calls. They can help you with management (how to secure the dog in the house/car so these situations can’t be practiced) and help with teaching confidence to an insecure dog. You may also want to seriously consider a visit to a veterinary behaviorist too (get pet insurance if you don’t have it—my visit was covered once the deductible was met). It’s not cheap, but meds were a game changer for my dog. |
| I had a good experience with Paw by Paw in the past. They used to do home visits in the past, not sure about now |
| OP did you find a good trainer? Facing a similar challenge with our dog. |
If he is territorial it might be better to go to a neutral space. Put your dog in crate or another room when people come over. Instruct kids to not look at dog which is seen as a threat My dog's friend is a wonderful rescource and they can help you. In person classes and many trainers come to your home. In Rockville, md |
| We are working with Sarah Stoycos, who teaches at Your Dog’s Friend and we’ve had her come to our house three times so far. She’s amazing! This is her site: http://www.laughingdogacademy.com/about-us.html |
| Thank you! I’ve added Sarah to my list of trainers to call this week. |
| Put him on trazodone |
Sarah is good, but if memory serves me right - she's positive only trainer. With behavior like that - I'd rather go to balanced trainer. Just my 2c |
