DC doing XC, and expectation is to show up for EVERY practice. This would be fine, except basketball (a winter sport) is starting clinics leading up to try outs in November. They are optional, but attending provides a lot of visibility with the coaches which could help at try outs.
How do most people handle this? Used to be you could play a different sport each season without conflicts, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore. |

My kid does XC and another sport. Was told every practice was required but the reality is that it’s not really enforced as long as you show up at least 75% of the time.
Has he confirmed? |
Hard to tell - coach said they wouldn’t be able to run in meets if they skipped practice but that might just mean invitationals. He’s a freshman so he likely wouldn’t qualify to run in those at this point anyway, but I can’t gage what the intent was from the coach. Of course me contacting the coach would be a sacrilege by my son’s standards 🤣 |
Parent should definitely not contact high school coach, let the kid do it. |
| Does your school have an approachable athletic director? They might have some advice. |
| Our XC/track coaches won’t let kids participate in other sports pre season practices/green days. It is lame. And if your kid makes postseason they won’t be able to go to tryouts for the winter sport. (At least this is now FCPS operates). |

Let your dc make the call. Is winter bball important to them, more than XC?
Ideally there wouldn’t be a conflict but the reality is lots of kids are navigating two sports during a HS season. |
| If its public school, they aren't allowed to do the off season/green day workouts for basketball if they are on the cross country team. |
| IME, they are supposed to go to what is in season, and it can put then at a disadvantage bc others are attending while they cannot. Super standout athletes can overcome this and still get a spot on the team / playing time, but it's hard to compete with others who dedicate themselves to the sport year-round and are always available for off-season training/practices. It is what it is... |
| Huh. My old coach would have been fine w it. It’s still exercise and xc runners are strengthened by cross training |
| At my DS' private high school, you were not allowed to do any out of season sport if you were currently in season for another sport. My DS swam and played baseball. He could go to any baseball workouts in the fall, but once winter sports started, he was only allowed to do swim. His last swim meet was after tryouts for spring sports ended. There were a couple of basketball players who were in the same situation. The coach reserved one day of tryouts for any players who were still in season and they had their own tryout. |
He personally values Basketball more but the reality is that he very well may not make the team despite appearing in Green Day’s and getting his face known to the coaches. It’s super competitive. |
I don’t think the basketball coaches care (other than becoming familiar with potential players). It’s the current sport coach, in this case XC who cares. |
Define "used to be"? What year, what school system, what school, what sports? Were these possible conflicts pre-coordinated? I know a couple of HS athletes who play two sports in the same season, and manage their green/yellow days for a winter sport. The athlete took all the steps prior to the fall season to coordinate things, to include having the DSA at the school be aware and sign off. |
What is a DSA? |
