Laundry room location

We don’t have a laundry room (washer and dryer are in basement) want to add one on our first floor as part of a larger addition to expand our dining room. Would it be strange to have a laundry room off the living room?

It’s not a great flow but I think it’s all we can do.

It's quite common in europe, I'm guessing just easier for plumbing.

It wouldn't be my preference. Are you developing the basement? What else would you want to put in that spot? Office, den, guest room, etc? It seems like really valuable real estate, I just wonder if a laundry room would be a bit of a waste.

Anyway to move the doorway so it's off the kitchen, mudroom, or garage? Or to create a passthrough so you can close off the door to the living room while still accessing the laundry if necessary?

The main concerns I'd have about it being off the living room would be noise -- even modern machines emit some noise and it could be annoying while watching TV or entertaining -- and mess (having dirty laundry or unfolded clean laundry visible or piling up in the living room would drive me nuts).

If you can find a way to address those, I don't think it's a big deal.

If at all possible, keep it on the same floor as the MBR. Carrying laundry up and down stairs is both tedious and potentially dangerous; it's much easier and safer to roll a wheeled laundry hamper from your MBR closet to a laundry room on the same floor than to always be hauling laundry between floors.

I have 2 laundry rooms, one upstairs with the kids room and one down, near the MBR. Incidentally off the living room. It’s fine, we close the door and can hardly hear it.

I understand you have constraints but think it’s pretty weird. The noise/shaking would be irritating if you do laundry while in the living room.

Upstairs is ideal. Have had that in two houses.

I was worried about this when we moved, but I barely notice having it in the basement. Sure, upstairs by the bedrooms would be nice. But I would prioritize a lot of things before that.

I would not bc of noise and also, humidity. Ours is in the basement where there is a humidifier and the reading is always up by ten points when the dryer is running.

Only if the house is big. In my small house, the living space is way more important.

Same here. It's awesome not to drag baskets everywhere. Plus it's like a little workshop for my domestic projects and there is extra storage in there for medical stuff. I love it.

Is it a room or a closet? Our laundry used to be in the mudroom off the living room and noise/shaking was not a big deal. We folded laundry on the couch and then carried it upstairs.

I moved the laundry upstairs during a reno, but off the living room was way better than basement which we'd had before in a different house.
