What salary increase is "insane" to say no to?

Husband has an opportunity to make a big jump in career. It is for all the right reasons. But.. and there is always a but.

He has a good job now. Paid fine. We support our family. Great flex. No real at home stress. Some nights he works after dinner, etc. but that is few and far between. He is truly present all the time. No real work stress keeping him from being his true self.

He has been at this company ten years. Mom and pop type place.

NEW job offer is much more pay. Big numbers - six figure increase alone (70%). Corporate. Same industry but much larger organization. Culture shock to say the least. Layoffs are always a worry, etc etc. Not knowing the true flex, not knowing the true anything about the inside.

Grass is not always greener. I have told him to take the leap. He is leaning that way as well.

Anyone here made the leap and have had resounding success? He has left companies before and has always grown and done well. This go around he seems more hesitant. The fear and comfort.

Hope he doesnt read DCUM.. haha

Is he continuing to expand the scope of his role and building new skills and networks at the mom and pop place? It can be easy to coast in jobs like that...the lifestyle is great but you may not be doing yourself any favors longterm. If things change at his current workplace (e.g. new owners), he could be sidelined or laid off. Depending on his age, it could be really difficult to find something else after staying at the same company for years and not building new skills and networks. The new job would definitely present risks, but there are also risks to staying where he is indefinitely!

Mom and Pop place will always take him back, especially if he's going to a big name. Sounds like he has a good relationship with them. Leaving for 70% more - they know they can't match that, he tells them that it's a good challenge for his career. They won't blame him.

What is Mom and Pop place's exit strategy? If they sell to PE, he's going to get f#cked.

No where else to go where he is. He would be stuck and that is one reason he did take the head hunter call. He knows. But it is hard to leave a well established lifestyle and comfort. I get his hesitation.

I do think he ends up taking it.

What's the pay difference and total HHI at current job vs new job?

For me, I wouldnt give up flexibility and time with my kids for more money.

OP did not say there would be no flex. It is not truly knowing until you get in there.

Dp. Every mom works. I assume you mean for money. Why not ask do you work for a paycheck?

$275 HHI to $410 HHI

It is real change. We get the money is not everything. And agree. This feels different.

Does he not have any network at the Company that he can find out about the workload? Can he ask other questions like about travel, times meetings are held, directly ask about flexibility and any TW options?

Take it but don't live like you did. Meaning save the money and avoid lifestyle creep for a few years.

The Mom and Pop place could fold. What if Pop dies or they get an illness and sell the place?

Tbh that’s not that much of an increase if the new role requires much more of him. Careful stepping into big corporate role vs stable mom and pop.
