Rec sports issue, first grade team! Is this normal?

Anonymous
Our coach said emailed out a depth chart so we learned our son is on the second string and isn’t a starter. They are in first grade. Is this normal? It’s 5v5 flag football and the kids will stick to one of 5 offensive positions and 3 defensive positions for the whole season. No changes on positions. Most are 6 and a few 7 year olds. This is my son’s second year in the program. He’s a center.

It does not seem normal. My kids did all kinds of rec sports starting at that age and switched positions often. They now range from hs to - upper elm, play both club and travel sports and I’ve still never seen a depth chart.

That's insane. Try flagstar (pro coached). Best coaching and an absolutely amazing organization with a positive attitude.

Kids are all supposed to get the same amount of playing time and at that age, it's about learning to play not winning.

Any organization that is doing any sport that way in first grade is insane.

Ask for your money back because this sounds like a scam.

Your coach seems to think hes living out a pro coaching dream.

Not in the developmental spirit of rec and likely against organization policy.

Sounds like a terrible coach. Beware.

There are lots of bad coaches in rec sports. We had a coach in K soccer that just had the kids play games that made no sense when it came to soccer. We had a coach in 2nd crate flag football that yelled at kids and pulled them from games. My son never returned to either sport. The flag football coach was also a basketball coach and we specifically asked not to be on his team.

NOT normal- not even normal for leagues above rec. At this age its about getting to learn the sport. Very weird (I've had kids in rec/travel for 10 years).

With little kids, I could see not wanting them to constantly moving to different positions because it can get too confusing to remember the plays. Kids that age still get right and left mixed up. They aren't always good at listening. There are reasons a coach would want kids to master a set of plays in a set position before upping the difficulty.

It's totally bizarre that a rec league coach would create a first and second string. That's not okay. All kids should get equal playing time.

seems par for the course. Come on its flag football.

And I bet the coaches kids are the starters and play the most favored positions? That part is normal in youth football. What is not normal is being so blatant about it and sending a depth chart. Usually, they are more discreet.

Agree there are plenty of bad coaches in rec. But usually even they don't so egregiously play kids unevenly.

However a rec league should have fair play rules in place that require coaches to play everyone every close to equally game (yes, even in high school if the league offers high school - because it's rec!). And they should have leadership above the coaches of some sort to complain to if the fair play rules aren't getting followed.

My DH was a commissioner in a rec league for a few years, and I think I only remember a two fair play complaints - and they were from other coaches not parents complaining that the coach was cheating by not rotating kids enough.
