After School Options

Anonymous
Hi I am a parent of a 2nd grader in the upper NW. The after school program at my son's school is full. They have other options but one does not start until September 8th. Does anyone know of any programs that pick up kids from school that may have openings?

am I missing something, or don't we kind of need to know the school - or at least the neighborhood - to know which program we can recommend? Are we talking Upper NW like Shepherd or Upper NW like Janney or Upper Nw like Murch? (don't worry, there's no way anyone can ID your kid from that info. Unless literally every other 2nd grader in your school got aftercare but yours!)

Thank you I just started researching them! I'm wondering why alot of these programs start after the first week of school. That's odd but what can you do.

Speaking as a former Whittier parent, I recommend talking to the school admin this week as well as other parents you meet. They will be able to either get you into the main afterschool program or help you find openings for programs or other care. Wishing you the best!

Isnt de colores offering after care for Whittier this year? Is that what’s full? We attended de colores for three years and it’s a wonderful little Montessori. I would have love for my kid to be in aftercare at de colores if they were attending Whittier.

I'm not sure, I was told of a program that had openings but they start on September 8th. The program that is considered the school's after care has a waitlist that we are on. Is de colores off site?

Another Whittier parent. De Colores is next door, at the corner of 3rd and Sheridan. I'm not sure how old the aftercare program is going to but I echo the other suggestion of asking Principal Johnson directly. They have historically tried to get everyone set. There are also a lot more after school club options in second grade which can help.

Thank you! The issue seems to be this week. There are a lot of options that start after labor day etc. I don't have enough leave to cover this week.

Aftercare has been full for the past two years. There are waitlists. They also have overflow to help with after school but that might not start this week.

Can you connect with another family that doesn’t use aftercare? Maybe your second grader can go home with a friend’s family for the next three days. We have a kid at Whittier and have several friends who pick up their kid at 3:15.

That would be nice. We are new to the school and the neighborhood. So I've met parents but not at a stage were I could make that sort of ask.
