Healthier lunch meats

I’m not MAHA.

Gearing up for school lunches for my fully vaccinated child who loved pepperoni.

What should I be looking for to make better lunch meat choices? I understand “no nitrates” is not meaningful. So what is? Anything?

You can get a meat press and make your own deli-style meat. At least then you control what goes into it.

Or, you can look for organic, nitrate-free, other buzzwords and make your peace with the fact that all our food is poisoned in some way or another these days. A deli-meat sandwich a couple times a week isn't going to kill a kid. balance it out with plain fruits and veg so there's plenty of fiber to move it along.

Can’t you just ask about lunch meat without bringing your lame ass politics into it?

I started roasting my own roast beef. Get a home deli slicer. It helps a lot.

I also will roast chicken breasts and slice them for sandwiches. You can control the seasonings.

Yeah, OP, do this, since I’m sure you are sitting around with nothing else to do.

Okay well I’m OP and this is helpful, and I’m reminded to poach and slice chicken breasts for lunch meat. But unfortch I know if I do that for the younger kid, it’s coming home untouched.

I do cook and slice my own lunch meat, but when we are in the mood for pepperoni, we just eat pepperoni.

If you think your kid would like something healthier with a similar flavor profile my kids like grated tofu cooked to be like chorizo or taco meat.

NP. It’s not hard to roast a chicken breast.

Also I will sometimes buy the house-roasted turkey breast from the WF deli.

What does your kid being fully vaccinated have to do with lunch?

Why not focus on what your kid will actually eat? My kid won't eat meat at all so I pack things like pancakes and yogurt.

This is a tough one, OP. I love pepperoni, salami, etc. Especially turkey pepperoni. I just have to think of it as a very salty, unhealthy treat for rare consumption.

I think turkey or chicken breast that is heavily peppered (it's peppered turkey or chicken at the deli but you'd have to do it yourself for the healthier version) would scratch the itch?

Slow cooker pot roast works pretty well and is pretty easy. Also I do breakfast sausages not sure how much healthier they are but they love them. Also rotisserie chicken pieces. It helps if you put in a dipping sauce ramekin.

I’d let my kid have pepperoni one day a week and pack healthier options the other days. Our pediatrician recommends sliced oven roasted turkey breast as a good option for sandwiches.

You are going to need some preservative if you aren't going to refrigerate the sandwich. That's what nitrates are for.

You can add an ice pack, and let cold be your preservative.
