Would you leave a stable but low paying job in this economy? Of course we should be stable in quotation marks as nothing is ever guaranteed.
Or would you wait? I am 46, I make $115k. While I enjoy my job I need more money because I now have new obligations (child support) that I did not have in the past. And I will be honest I am also running ito confidence issues thanks to this board that reminds every 2 days that around my age I'll be lucky to be hired So I guess it's safer to stay put and do door dash on the side. And at my age the longer I wait, the harder it will be. My current job title is data associate. |
| Following. My situation is slightly different -- my income is depressed by the fact that I work less than full time in a contract position doing a very niche job that almost no one else has my kind of experience to do. So it's extremely secure. But there is simply not enough of this work to sustain a full time job. I've been contemplating leaving to get a full time but more generalist position, with higher overall pay and benefits, but am worried it's a mistake to give up the security and flexibility of my current job. I'm 45. I go back and forth on this constantly. |
| Perhaps perspective helps? I’m your age and $115K is a lot more than I make! |
OP here. I am thankful for my salary. Bue due to child support payments the truth is l need more money despite making cuts everywhere in my budget. |
| Leave it for what? |
| You really don’t know what a low paying job is, do you? |
| I would at least apply. |

My parents each made $25,000 before they were let go and never worked again.
In a just world, you'd be dead in a ditch somewhere. (And so would I.) |
| There is no stable in 2025. |
| I would never leave a job until I had something else guaranteed and lined up. |
| Your job is NOT low-paying. Also, probably not as stable as you think. By the way, a stable low-paying job is something like a CNA. |

No. Pick up a second job. You have been bad with money if you have no investments left after many years of working. I have hundreds of thousands and I only made $27k a year the last 28 years.
You are short ca $200 a week. You already posted. Restaurants are hiring. |
| Get a second job for extra income. |

No no no
Not with trump in office By January there will be no jobs!! His plan is to destroy the economy!!! |

NP. So many harsh responses. I agree that $115k isn't low pay compared to the national average, but I understand why a 46 y.o. who reads DCUM would feel that way. This site is full of posts from people with a NW of >$5 million (not to mention inheritances, trust funds, etc.) Plus it is hard to live in the DC area and support a child on that salary if you also want to save for retirement.
OP - I would probably keep your job. Not only is it relatively stable, but you said that you enjoy it. That is a big win in life! You didn't comment on your work/life balance, but if it's a 9-5-ish job without crazy hours, that is a big win too. I would look into a side gig but probably not Door Dash. |
