My daughter is an avid golfer and will enter high school next year. She would like to play on the high school golf team. The public school she will go to has a coed team. My daughter hits the ball long and straight, and shoots low scores, but I'm not sure how she would fare competing against boys.
If anybody reading this has a daughter with experience on a high school coed golf team, can you please share some information about her experience? What were the pros and cons of her experience with the team? |
I don't have a daughter that played golf but my son played (an FCPS high school) and the best golfer in his district was a female. She came in 1st place in the district every year, and I think she may have been in the top five at the Regional tournament - this is golfing head to head against boys. She now plays golf on a D1 team and has earned honors in college so she is definitely a fantastic golfer. |
| Yeah this isn’t an issue I’m HS. She’ll play from the ladies/seniors tees so may even have a slight leg up. Best golfer on our HS team was also a girl. Go get em! |
| 14:09 is correct. Girls hit off the closer tees in competition, so no worries about needing to out-drive the boys. Besides, it’s the short game that has the most impact. |
My kid plays varsity coed golf for Langley HS. The boys plays from the white tees while the girls play from the red tee. Either that, or boys play from the blue tees and girls play from the white tees. Boys, in general, are much better golfer than girls with driver, Iron, and short game. |
Based on the volume of boys vs girls players I have seen so far I think you are not correct. It seems HS coed teams (all Fairfax teams are coed right?) you're seeing 1-2 girls, and 3-4 boys. But those teams don't have that ratio of non-varsity golfers. Given that, the girls are better with the irons/hybrid and in the short game. Boys are driving it longer, as expected, the girls make up for distance with accuracy. Boys are also much more prone to accuracy issues off the tee. |
New to golf, new to HS golf, and a parent of a boy player. But I've coached a ton of rec sports, boys and girls, and have some observations. There does not seem to be any issues with making a roster based on gender. Different schools will roster more or less players based on coach preference, logistics, etc. As pointed out already, and as with golf in general, the girls will tee off from closer. Which makes sense. I have found from observing that I think this does separate them a bit from the match play chit chat, which should be remedied if the foursome has basic course play etiquette. If she's good in the short game, as with golf in general, she'll have no issues making the team. Aside from what are probably the better/best public teams, most male players struggle with accuracy off the tee. I'd say that's more specific to the 4th or 5th players on a match varsity roster. Competing against boys won't be her issue, it'll be specific to the school she will attend, how many they keep on the roster, and what her (your?) expectations are for her freshman year. It's harder and harder to find HS sports info every year, IMO, and so you'll probably have to go to the HS golf IG account to find their prior and current results. I am not seeing that on HS athletics websites anymore. Check what courses the future HS team plays at, check the team scores, and have your daughter play there to get a feel. Your school might not make any cuts, might cap the roster at a # of players, etc. But only 6 golfers play in matches. Don't expect your kid to make that top 6 as a freshman, but she'll probably make the team given that she's played before. |
