Callback?

Anonymous
My son went to st James boys tryout today and didn't get an offer but got a callback for tomorrow. He seems a bit bummed like this is a longshot at this point.

What's the deal with callbacks?

It's unique to each club, but I think a callback is a good thing. The coaches use it to combine different groups of kids together to see which combination works best. They look for chemistry, versaitility in players, coachability. They may have certain players already in mind for certain positions and may need to see who best fills the gaps.

It is good to get an offer right after the tryouts - that means you made it. It is a bummer to get a negative answer - that means you are no longer under consideration. A callback is somewhere in the middle - it means that you still have a chance, but you are competing against other players for the same position your son is considered. Don't show up at the callback with a defeated attitude: take it as another opportunity for your son to demonstrate that he is a great athlete and a great teammate.
