PSA- Diwali day off date change

Anonymous
The latest email from APS says we’ll now have off for Diwali on Oct 20, not 21 (even tho online, the one showing the months in calendar format still says the 21st). Just so you’re not surprised…

Argh several months ago I scheduled neuropsych testing for the 21st so my kid wouldn’t have to miss school. How does this keep happening??????

That doesn’t make sense. The moons path is known for centuries out. Is it about clouds blocking visibility on a certain decision day or something? But it’s two months away…

It looks like it is a multiday celebration so not sure why APS can’t stick with original day off or at least warn parents that date could change. Also Jewish holidays work on a lunar calendar but dates are known in advance. And if it was based on someone seeing the moon, wouldn’t the date have not changed yet?

That's odd, FCPS has had the correct day since they released the calendar. I updated my calendar in June and it's October 20.

What’s frustrating is that they bury this calendar change (which actually happened at a school board meeting in July) at the bottom of a long email.

What's the purpose of having a calendar committee create calendars years in advance if this keeps happening? Incompetence.

What's Diwali?

Not only did that Diwali date change but also there was another change later in the year that also surprised me - added a half day in March? I can’t remember exactly but it was something they caught me off guard when I looked last week.

Ridiculously the school calendar APS mailed us last week with our teacher assignment has the wrong date on it. It still says Oct 21 despite it being changed in July.

They tell parents not to have their kids miss school but when we listen and try to schedule doctors appointments for random days off, they move them without proper notice or warning. It is ridiculous.

Email the school board and superintendent. They need to hear specific examples like this of how their poor communication creates problems for families.

Religious holiday closures are a failed experiment. Give all students and staff 2 personal holidays. If you want to ensure operational efficacy have them be payable if they don’t get used.
