Hi all--would appreciate some inputs on how much I should budget to mow 2 acres of lawn? No additional services other than mowing. The previous owner paid 80$, but the lawn guys now said I need to pay more. I live in Gaithersburg. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. |
Probably $250. My mother pays $100 for 1/4 acre. |
$300. |
With two acres really depends on how many obstructions there is and how much edging. It takes longer than just open land thats two acres. If there's boxwoods aligning a long driveway where you can't get a mower in it will be longer. Some driveways are long and need edging on both sides. We edge around mulch areas where the grass starts to grow in. Around swimming pools and fences takes time. If you have all that may take two or three hours. $300 a week min. |
You should just buy a zero turn mower. $5000 investment, and you could mow 2 acres in about an hour with that. |
She’s getting ripped off. |
That seems high. We pay $40 for 1/4 acre with a large landscaping company. It takes the crew less than 10 minutes to mow and edge everything. We have a lot of landscaping and lots of corners and edges. They have other customers in our neighborhood so they are able to keep the cost low. Look for trucks that come to your neighborhood regularly and contact those ones. |

Maximum Overdrive. |
We have 3 acres and got quotes (just out of curiosity) for $100-$150. I think $100 is low. I have a zero turn mower with a 60 inch deck and cut it myself. I enjoy it and being far from the neighbors. I would never pay someone that much to cut the lawn. It would amount to thousands per year. I really think if you have a property that big, unless you are unable to do so for physical reasons, you should count on mowing it yourself unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket. It is just not cost effective to pay someone to cut such a large lawn. |
I was paying $35, which included edging. I actually paid the guy more because I think he needs to charge more.

This is good advice. The guy I was paying $35 (which included edging) does a lot of the houses in the neighborhood, which saves him fuel costs and helps to keep prices lower. |
The problem I found with lawn services is that they want to cut every two weeks. Many times there is no need to cut yet. All that noise and pollution bothers me so I cut it myself now and probably cut it at least half as often as my neighbors |
