Where to find pro bono work?

I'm a fed lawyer. I'd like to do pro bono work rather than donating my way out of it. Any suggestions? It's tricky when you're a Fed. I'm barred in DC and Maryland but live in NOVA.

What issue do you want to work on? Find a nonprofit doing that work and see if they mentor/provide cases to feds.

That’s a risky proposition. The chances of getting an elite attorney to represent you are slim. You’re more likely to run into a former doc reviewer/Board of Veterans’ Appeals attorney turned solo practitioner.

This. Pick the ones off the floor. That was me. I had no idea what happened to me or why. I do now, but it was very devastating at that time.
At some point I realized that it's normal to see people on the floor crying after they are left out of jail where they should have never been.
I would take it like a champ next time, but first time was very scary. I had no idea where my kid was and my purse. Cops kept all my cash. Apparently they can.
Wasn't there a thread here about people hating cops? I have so many reasons.

do you know what area you'd want to work in? Wills and trusts, family law, landlord/tenant are all usually far enough outside of federal work to be easy to get approved, and there are others as well.

DC bar pro bono center is a good suggestion. Other places that have established pro bono programs include Legal Aid DC, Whitman-Walker Health, Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, and Children's Law Center.

I'm a fed too. You should concentrate on Maryland pro bono opportunities. I believe there are issues with representing anyone in any DC court because they are all a federal jurisdiction. I would talk to your agencies ethics office. (I know it doesn't seem like we do ethics these days but . . )

There is a desperate need for pro bono attorneys to take immigration cases. Since you're barred in MD, you can do custody cases for unaccompanied children.

That's the pro bono you get in my state where virtue signaling judges can press you into taking on pro bono cases. End up having to defend the highest profile of crimes and at the end you have to get on your knees to beg the clerk for some reimbursement.
