Hollin Hills for families?

How is the Hollin Hills area for families? We know there are no sidewalks, and the schools aren't highly rated...

I wouldn't do it. Th schools suck and I'm not a fan of Alexandria both fairfax county and the city of. Rt. 1 is very rough. Do you currently live around here or are you moving to the area?

Harsh. Where do you live? There’s more to Alexandria than Route 1.

If you're sending your kids to private school, it's a great choice because the community is lovely. If not, your choosing a Mod Century design aesthetic over academic opportunity. Sad, but unfortunately true until Fairfax County comes up with a real solution for separating underperforming students from neighborhood schools.

The ES is Hollin Meadows, which is not great.

Are your kids AAP material? If so, they will go to Stratford Landing, and then be in the AAP cohort in middle school, and probably stay with their group of friends from MS at West Po. That’s not an awful path, and lots of families from the area do it.

If you’re not certain your kids will get into AAP (or if the county switches away from the center school model), there’s a Catholic K-8 school right up the street that seems to be a great fit for well-behaved middle/upper middle class kids who don’t get into AAP and need to get out of the Alexandria Fairfax County schools.

Hollin Meadows has a strong PTA community, many great teachers, and a reasonably recently renovated building. The test scores are lower due to the number of new immigrant families who are still in the process of learning English.
