| I am so sick of walking through Borders or browsing Amazon's Hot 100 and more than half the books are about vampires, werewolves, or something of that sort. I like True Blood, I am a fan. I get that Twilight was popular, athough I did not read it. But I don't want to spend my time reading about the supernatural. I want plots that involve real people facing real problems. A little divergence from reality is fine too -- I loved Geek Love, for instance. And enough cutesy chick lit too. Quality fiction. |

| agreed. and prepubescent hero boys. |
| And every broadway show has to be written around some singer's greatest hits album. |
| My only truly succesful solution has been to be travel back in time: Wallace Stegner, Robert Penn Warren, a little Laurie Colwin. But I hear that the new Franzen book is very good, and I liked Jonathan Dee's "The Privileges." (It had some reviews that made it sound terrible, but I don't think those readers "got" the book.) |

OP here -- I liked The Privileges too. The new Franzen is on my e-shelf and I'm looking forward to it. There IS good stuff out there. It's just discouraging that there's so much crap. |

I recall reading an article about a year ago in the WSJ about how the hottest selling books were Jane Austen books, Vampires and monsters. There's a whole new genre of books that retell Austen's books with the addition of zombies and vampires.

The new Franzen book is a hollow shell of his prior work, so manage your expectations
I'm like a PP, I go back and pick up stuff that I missed in the last 25 years and never got around to. Philip Roth, for example. |
| I was vampire when vampire wasn't cool. |
| I didn't see that exact memo but I did see a memo about trying to put out products that sell well. Vampires sell. And I'm one of the suckers (no pun intended) who loves vampires and can't help but pick up these admittedly cheeseball works! |

I am really enjoying "Room" by Emma Donoghue right now. Amazing.
Actually, any book on the Booker short list is probably worth reading. |

I do hear you on the vampire thing. Stephanie Meyer may be one of the best selling authors ever, but she is one of the worst writers. I tried to read a little of Twilight because it was so big. Lumbering, cliched and moronic. And the message it sends to young women! I found "The Passage" entertaining at first, but I lost interest half way through. Just not that interested in vampires. |
