DH's college friends DD26 is heading to VT for comp sci. Don't think her stats are amazing.
From Richmond area though. I told him it's probably easier to get in if you aren't from NOVA, not that Richmond is in the middle of nowhere but don't want him to get his hopes up for DS next year. |
| 100% yes. |
| It’s harder to get in everywhere competitive from the DC area. |
| VT admissions can be unpredictable overall, even within individual regions and schools. |
| At the info session we went to for the Business school at tech they said admission from NOVA is more competitive than anywhere else in the state. |
|
Yes, because fewer kids from out of state attend, because there is little merit aid and the cost is higher. So they offer it to more kids to get the right balance of 65% in state/35% OOS.
The yield for accepted students (those taking the offer) is higher for in state. |
| Of course! |

I mean, let’s not get carried away. Like OP said, the Richmond area isn’t exactly a backwater. After NOVA and Hampton Roads it’s got more people than anywhere else in VA.
The most recent statistics available on SCHEV (for 2023-24) show the acceptance rate for NOVA to average in the low to mid 40s with Richmond and its surrounding suburban counties at around 50 percent. So yes it’s marginally — but not dramatically — harder to get admitted from NOVA. |
It is very much harder to get into the top VA schools from Northern Virginia. But as far as every other competitive school that is not a VA state school, it’s no harder to get in from NoVA than from any other well educated, relatively affluent area. |
Weird that you know the stats of your husband’s college friend’s kid. |
You must be a deeply uncurious person. |
+1 Not sure how this is news? |
+1 Not to mention, if she actually got into VT for CS, then her stats were indeed amazing. Don't think the OP knows what she's talking about. |
I am not so curious as to inquire about the stats of the children of my college friends. Nope. That’s very odd. |
+1 Anyone claiming to know the stats of any kid other than their own is lying. It's so transparent. |
