| Some teams are scheduling open gyms before tryouts. We’ve never been to one before, so wondering what to expect. Are these structured drills / work outs or are kids just shooting around? The ones I am looking at are 2 hours. Do we plan to stay the whole time? |
| Typically these start with shoot around but then are run like practices or clinics. They will probably do some dribbling drills, some full court drills like 3 man weave and full court cone and chair drills. Then probably scrimmages. |

Most teams do open runs to try to see if they can recruit reclasses or big guys. Most start with stretching nd warming up, maybe some drills, then its just 5v5 with the winning team staying and the next team in.
Some are good but a lot of kids are trying to showcase themselves so trying to stand out is hard. Good to go and get playing time against competition. You never know |
| Open gym should just be pickup games. An open workout could be run like a practice, but open gym shouldn’t be. |
| I think it kind of depends on what the team needs. Are they actually recruiting. They may just be a regular practice and other kids show up. Other times they may be more inclusive. |
What to expect? Ball hogging and lots of obnoxious fouls. You asked. |
HAHA true. |
Been to few open runs lately. Like a controlled practice to start with warms up and some skill drills. Then on to either 3v3 but mostly 5v5 games with just pick up ball. Lot's of ball hogging or too much dribbling but I've also seen some of the teams play team ball and do well. Its winners stay on so either your son will play a lot if he gets.a decent team or not as much of they don't win. |

Observation after being at open gyms over the last couple weeks
1) Coaches are looking for certain players- bigs and reclass mostly. This is a chance for them to get as many kids in a gym without being try outs to see if anyone is worthy to be recruited 2) Lot of kids know they have to do something to stand out so ball hogging, too much dribbling, and too many bad shots happen 3)Kids who know each other normally pass to each other That being said it's free and it's a chance for your kid to get some playing time. Your kid will get to play with some decent kids which is always a plus. If you go not expecting anything out of it, it's a good experience and anytime in a gym always helps |
