| Hoping to get advice for my U16 boy. His EDP team moved up to an ECNL RL team so the team had to try out again this spring and most of them were cut. My kid was on the bubble so the coach put off making the decision on him until the end of the season. More than once during this process, I talked to the coach and expressed concern for having a team this fall. He assured me that we didn't need a plan B because there is always lots of movement on teams so waiting on a decision would not disadvantage him. His first team referral took over a month to respond and now just told us that they don't have a spot. All the websites I've looked at indicate that tryouts were in the spring. Anyway, I feel so naive at this point and like I really let my kid down. Is it worth it to try to find a coach with an open spot? My kid just wants to be kicking a ball this fall and I'm not sure where to begin. |
EVERY team has one open spot. EVERY team. Start calling and assembling his highlight tape. |
|
so he was never were offered a spot on the ECNL RL team? no deposit?
I think the coach let your kid down and not you. I would think there is still a chance you can find a team because HS age rosters can be large. Could give you recommendations where do look if you can say where you live in general |
| That coach sounds like a real piece of work. You shouldn’t be shy about blasting the club, but understand if you don’t want to. As a PP said, there are roster spots, just contact clubs and ask for a tryout…It might take a few tries to find a club that gives an offer and that he wants to go to. Don’t be discouraged and good luck! |
| Omg that would totally piss me off. So he’s in a team, team moves to a dufferent league, then your kid gets cut? That’s messed up. No advice, just commiseration. |
| Did you sign a team agreement and pay already? If so read the agreement xlosely. |
We're in southeast Fairfax County. Yes, would love recommendations. It sounds like it is worth trying to find a team. Thank you! |
Check out BRYC. They practice at Woodson. |
| Most youth travel coaches aren’t very good and have no idea how to train a player. Find a team and sign your player up for some extra training. Contact the admin at the club that did this and have an adult conversation. Travel is the new rec soccer. |

South East Fairfax County ECNL RL... was it LMVSC?
Yes, unless the roster is full with 20 kids, teams will still take players in the fall. Try, LMVSC (unless that was your club), Gunston, Alexandria or even SYC. Good luck. |
| Try Fairfax Academy 08s, FPYC, or Vista Vengeance (practice in Centreville, not sure if that's too far). |
| Hopefully you can find an opening. Email every club around and send a highlight reel. As long as he’s not a GK, I bet he can find a spot. Something similar happened to my GK but we were notified late May. As a GK, it was really stressful. There were no openings left as all the clubs contacted at his level had 2 GKs rostered already. In hindsight, he should have explored options in the spring but he was a starter who only received positive feedback so he didn’t expect it. In the end he did find a spot but it wasn’t what he hoped for. He should probably just have accepted the old club’s offer for the 2nd team with many of his old teammates but he was so blindsided he was upset with them. Did he get a return offer for a lower team? |
| So crappy to do this to any kid, but especially high schoolers who have been on their teams. |
| Villarreal |
| Sounds like SYC! Or at least that seems like something they are starting to do. That's horrible. |
