| I'm in the beginning stages of thinking about a trip to Norway next summer. If you've been, what were the highlights/the places I should plan the trip around? |
| Hiking around Balestrand and staying at the Kviknes hotel. |
| So many wonderful areas to hike in Norway. Oslo is a wonderful small town to explore. Train to Bergen, boat into the Fjords. Train from Flam and Myrdal. Or go south of Norway and hike Gaustatoppen - a mountain in the county of Telemark, Norway. The 1,883-metre (6,178 ft) tall mountain is located on the south side of the town of Rjukan and is the highest mountain in Telemark. In the summer, they have cabins and a ski lodge you can stay in. Trondheim, Lofoten Islands. SO many wonderful spots - best is to determine how long you will be there and focus you travel. |
| Love the Vigeland outdoor sculpture park in Oslo. See The Scream (there are a few versions) at the Munch Museum in Oslo, too. |
|
Went on an amazing 10-day driving tour of the Fjord region. Used Nordic Visitor to book everything - itinerary, hotels, rental car, excursions. Would highly recommend.

Lofoten Islands hands down . Rent a car from Svolvaer and drive around the nearby vilages and beaches.
Also visit Bergen. |
Kviknes hotel was the highlight of our trip. The drive from Bergen to the ferry probably my favorite travel memory. |
| Another vote for Lofoten Islands |
|
Bergen, Trongheim, Lofoten Islands!
I am not a hiker but my son is intent on going back at sometime to hike to the Troll’s tongue. |
++. Wonderful experience and beautiful area. |
|
We flew into Oslo and spent a few days there - museums, Vigeland Park, palace tour (not always open), etc.
Train to Bergen - 7 hours of beautiful scenery. Book the "first class" tickets. Spent a few days in Bergen - shopping, fish market, art museum, cable car Ferry to Balestrand/Kviknes - hiking, tour to the glacier nearby Flew home from Bergen. I would have liked to add Lofoten Islands, but we'll have to go back sometime to prioritize it. |

We loved Oslo and Bergen. Very different vibes but both fun. But our favorite places were Manshausen Island (a private resort) and exploring the Lofoten Islands.
We used Up Norway to plan our trip. Highly recommend. |
| These are all good tips, I will also plug Trondheim as a very chill easy to navigate city. Much less tourism and very good food |
| If you can, try and visit Geiranger fjord (and Alesund). As suggested by PPs, Lofoten Islands are amazing (flying in from Bodo may be tricky because of the winds, so beware). If you are into hiking at all, Bessegen Ridge hike in the Jotunheimen national park is amazing! You can take a boat from Gjendesheim to the start of the hike in the morning and hike back to your car (or bus). |
| Any interest in history or Vikings? I can add, but only if you are interested... |
