Narcan question

Anonymous
In Virginia, can I just buy Narcan somewhere - like Walgreens or CVS - without a prescription? I feel like I heard you have to take a class first, but maybe that has change. Pretty confident my teen isn't experimenting with drugs or pills, but we have a lot of teens in our house every weekend and I think it would be smart to have it.

If you honestly think that you have teens over at your house doing drugs, you have bigger problems than knowing whether or not you can get narcan without an RX.

Of course I don't think they are doing drugs and we would never knowingly allow it, but if you think any group of teens is 100% safe from an opioid overdose you are really naive. All guidance now says to have narcan in the house if you have a teen and to send it with them to college as well.

I just found you can order it on amazon. Done.

You can buy on Amazon, very safe to have the nasal spray on hand it’s not going to harm anyone ( training sometimes offered for high school students if schools have it easily accessible)

If you honestly think no teens in your house might ever be exposed to opiates and/or need narcan, you are part of the problem. There won't be a neon sign warning you. Just an OD'd teen on your floor.

Choosing not to prepare for that possibility is choosing to let a teen die a preventable death on your watch. If you're okay with that, you're a monster.

OP, here's the info you're looking for: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/naloxone/

You can get narcan mailed to you for free if you are in VA, over 18, and "are likely to witness or experience an opioid overdose emergency" (i.e. if you have a friend who uses opioids, or want to be a friend to someone who does): https://kobe.vdh.virginia.gov/cphdev/r/web/naloxone-resources/naloxone-resources

Recognizing that PPs are talking about Virginia, but if you are in DC, please request your free doses: https://www.healthsupportnow.org/order-naloxone

Everyone should have some Narcan at home. That is how we can stop opioid deaths.

You can find it for free in many locations. The medical building where I am doing PT has a box by their main doors. I made sure my kids and nephews/nieces all have one to carry in their cars. When you need it, you don’t want to be wishing you had it.

I’ve never needed it, been around anyone who needed it, nor wished I had it.

It makes a great gift!

You should have it in the house if anyone takes prescription opioids for pain management. An overdose can occur by accident. It's not just for druggies.

If your teen hangs out with druggies, then put it in their backpack too. Though it might be better in the long run to teach them to choose their friends more wisely.
