With DC police under federal control and with instructions to assist with detention of undocumented immigrants, I wonder what this will mean for students in DCPS—students who are undocumented foremost but all brown students (immigrants and native born). DCPS is notoriously slow and reactive so I don’t expect to hear much from downtown.
Has any heard any word about the role of police (school resource officers but also the regular police) in schools this fall? What are teachers and immigrant communities and organizations thinking? I’m sure there is some organizing and planning but I’m not familiar with it. As an immigrant parent myself this is on my mind. |
Free DC had a webinar on this on Wednesday, and there is a youth-oriented one coming up this week:
https://freedcproject.org/event-list/know-your-rights-youth-centered-training It was also a primary topic at Councilmember Lewis George's Ward 4 town hall last night. Schools are creating rapid response teams to send witnesses, etc. I highly recommend checking in with your schools' parent organization and with Free DC. All upcoming events posted here: https://freedcproject.org/event-list |
I suspect DCPS and schools won’t have an official statement or position since Bowser is very cautious. But parent groups and teacher groups have formed so ask around. |
