FCPS Pilot - Algebra 1 in 6th Grade

Anonymous
I haven't seen this discussed yet..... FCPS is piloting Algebra 1 for 6th graders at several elementary schools. For some, the course will be taken virtually. For others, it will be offered in person. Students were selected based on SOL and iReady scores. Families of students who qualified were notified this week. Students will be automatically opted in, but parents can choose to opt them out.

For those who have a child selected, how are you feeling about this? At our school, many seem happy to let their 6th grader take Algebra 1, but our family is hesitant to put our child on such an accelerated track. Also, it would be great to hear from teachers, those with math curriculum knowledge, etc.

Thank you!! I was surprised I hadn't seen anything. Should have known there was already a discussion going.
