I want to update our staircase, which was originally built in 2008. So many recent remodels and new builds feature wood railings with iron balusters that it almost feels ubiquitous at this point. I don’t dislike the look, but it seems like everyone is doing this right now.
Both wood and iron can be timeless and beautiful on their own, but this mixed material combo feels very “of the moment,” and I’m questioning how well it will age. What do you think? Is this trendy? |
| I can't tell whether you already have the mixed material stair or want to install it. Either way, I think it's fine (I wouldn't tear one out) but whether it's timeless depends on the style of house. It can look great in some western styles of house (like a California contemporary) but IMO it's not a great fit in the colonial and mid-century houses we tend to have around here. |
| If you try to follow trends, then you will always be trending and never happy. |
This. |
| The staircase should match the period and style of the house. Don’t update it unless it didn’t before. |
True but this is a little precious. You really think someone with a house in nova from the 1980s should stick with that style? |
