Overweight and Fertility Support

If you are an overweight mom or overweight ttc woman, has anyone in the area had any good experiences with local fertility doctors (SG, Columbia, others?) that were willing to work with you? I have already been told that Dominion won't see me because my BMI is over 30. Shady Grove will see me, but wanted to see if anyone had experiences there or if you have had any other experience other places. Thanks for your input.

How much over 30 is your BMI? Mine is right at 30 and I have never had a problem at SG. In fact, nothing has ever been mentioned to me. I have a feeling that anything below 35 is probably not going to raise an eyebrow at SG, but higher than 35 might draw some attention.

I went to the Muasher Center and had a positive experience (meaning I got good advice/compassionate treatment plus conception success). My BMI was 33.

I had no problems at SG and Dominion didn't mention that he thought it was a problem that I should work on (which I already was) until 2 years into treatment.

Dr. Rafat Abbasi, practices in Bethesda and NoVa.

She's very tactful and nonjudgemental, treated me readily, and I have two children from her treatments.

My BMI was over 30 when I was cycling at DF and it only came up when I asked about it. Dr. D said that it would be better to lose weight to have a healthier pregnancy, but it shouldn't really affect cycling.

Same thing when I consulted at CRMI/Cornell.

OK, I am overwaight ... and way passed 30 BMI. Why would you be turned away? That isn't right.

excess weight affects your hormone levels and may be a contributing factor to infertility

But also, weight can be a symptom of some infertility issues, such as PCOS. So, it would be good to get a work-up to make sure that you aren't having those issues. I have seen some women with PCOS get on the meds (metformin) and get pg without any other intervention.

I think DF is the best in the area...I wouldn't rule them out based upon someone's say so.

You'd be turned away because success rates aren't as high when you are carrying excess weight (or so I have read in a lot of places). Dominion would turn you away because they'd have to work harder to get you pregnant. Go somewhere that will help you reduce your weight to improve your chances and help you get pregnant at the same time. Sounds like Dominion just wants the easy cases.

I'm the PP with a 33 BMI, so I write this as an overweight woman. Unfortunately, aside from the general health risks, being o/w does affect fertility. It doesn't mean it will make it impossible to have a child but it is a factor, that's all. Clinics who want better numbers don't want the trouble and reduction in stats.

Here's an article about higher m/c rates in o/w and obese IVF patients: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10434138

In the UK in recent years (where IVF is covered for under national health care), there have been debates about banning free IVF for obese patients over a certain BMI because IVF is simply less successful the higher the BMI. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7092164.stm

I'm not making these points to be discouraging but it's something of which to be aware. Many doctors have a hard time speaking openly with patients about this and may only discuss the risks or problems if asked directly. I think many don't even bring it up or initiate discussion about it.
